atoms,ions,and molecules

atom an atom is the smallest basic unit of matter
element is one particular type of atom,and it cannot be broken down into a simpler substance br ordinary cheamial means
compound is a substance made of atoms different elements bonded together in a certain ratio.
ion is an atom that has gainedor lost one or more electrons.
ionic bond forms through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions.
covalent bond forms when atoms share a pair of elections.
molecule is two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
hypdrogen bond is an attraction between a slightly positive atom and a slightly negative atom often oxygen or nitrogen
cohesion the attraction among molecules of a substance is cohesision
adhesion the attraction among molecules of different substances is called adhesion
solution is a mixture of substane that is the same thoughout it is a homogeneous mixture.
solvent is the substance that is present in the greater amount and that dissolves another substance
solute is a substance that dissolves in a solvent
acid is a compound that release a proton- a hydrogen(ht)- when it dissolves in water
bases are compound that remove h ions form a sloution
