Bio Honors Chap 11

Vocab Words from the Prentice Hall Biology Book from Chapter 11 controlling gene

QuestionAnswer
Promoter site where transcription enzyme,RNA polymerase, attaches and initiates transcription
Gene Expression Process in which genetic information flows form genes to proteins (genotype-> phenotype)
Operator Acts as a switch. Determines whether RNA polymerase can attach to the promoter and start transcribing genes
Operon Cluster of genes with a related function
Repressor Functions by binding to the operator and blcoking the attachment of RNA polymerase to the promoter
Regulatory Gene Codes for the repressor
Activators Proteins that turn operons ON by binding to DNA
Histones The small beads that make up nucleosomes
Enhancer DNA sequence that the activators bind to. Usually far away from the gene that they regulate
Silencers Function to tinhibit the state of gene transcription, may act analougously by binding to a repressor
Hemotic Gene A master control gene that regulates batteries of other genes that actually determine the anatomy of the parts of the body
Signal Trandsduction Pathway Series of moleclar changes that convert a signal on a large cell's surface to a specific response inside the cell
Homeoboxes Nucliotide sequence which is stranslated into a segment of the protein product of the homeotic gene
Proto-Oncogene A normal gene with the potential to become an oncogene

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
