QuestionAnswer
Green House Gases CO2, CH4, H20, N20
What do Greenhouses do? Create an atmospheric blanket that traps in heat.
To much of heat from the Green House Gases causes... Global Warming
Greenhouse gases can cause what effects living things? temperature change
Fossil Fuels Burning of theses causes higher rates of CO2 in the atmosphere
Some example of Fossil fuels are... Gasoline, Coal, and Natural Gases
Enviromental Effects causes... Warmer Atmospheric Changes (increased precip and drought) & Warmer Ocean Temps, which kills some species.
Warmer Ocean Temps causes... Increased Storm Strength and Bleaching of Coral Reefs
What are 3 effects of the melting of artic sea and land ice Ruined habitats for animals; increased sea levels can flood low lying cities; change in ocean currents
What does an increased sea level do? Flood low lying cities.
CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons) Gases used in aerosol, sprays and styrofoam products.
CVCs break down upper atmosphere and react with UV light to beak down... Ozone (O3)
They also cause ... (CFC's) Skin Cancer, Cataracts, immune system disorders, damages crops.
Particulates are ..... Tiny said particles that are suspended in the air.
Examples of Particulates are... Dust, Soot, Ash
Primary Polluants Pollutants that go directly into the atmosphere
The Majority of Primary Pollutants come from, Car Exhaust
Acid Rain is a secondary pollutant which causes reaction between H2O and SO2
Acid Rain ... lowers the PH level in soil and water, damages plants and animal life.
What is Bad Ozone Ozone in the lower atmosphere due to VOC's and/or N*O*
Bad Ozone increases what? Lung Disorders and crop distruction.
What is Smog a combination of Smoke and Fog.
Clean Air Act (1990) Government Regulation to reduce amount of air pollutants.
What percent of Earth's water is freshwater? 3%
Most ground water is stored in... Aquifers
What re Aquifers Deep underground reservoirs of water.
What is a Water Shed Area of land that drains into lakes, creeks, and rivers
What effects the water supply? Pollutants
T or F Sewage from people and farm animals effects water supply? TRUE
Thermal Pollution Warmer waters from houses, factories, etc. that are released into enviroment.
Biological Magnification Organisms absorb toxic chemicals from thier habitat into their bodies.
Smog makes a yellowish haze. What causes this? NxOx and O3
Name some primary pollutants. CO (carbon monoxide) SO2 (Sulfur dioxide), VOCs (Volatile Organis Compounds); NxOx (Nitrogen/oxygen compounds)
What are some of the NxOx pollutants? NO (nitric oxide), N2O (nitrous oxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide)
Primary pollutants lead to secondary pollutants
Smog can lead to what type of medical problems? breathing disorders like asthma and bronchitis
The Clean Air Act limits or bans the use of what type of products? ozone depleting products (CFCs & VOCs)
A small percentage of the Earth's fresh water is usable groundwater
What type of pollutants from watersheds effect the water supply? sewage from humans and animals, erosion and excess sediment
Biological magnification occurs when one contaminated organism is eaten and .. the concentration of the contaminate builds up in the next tropic level of the food chain
Biological magnification is measured in.. parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb)
What are some examples of biological magnification? DDT (pesticide) in bald eagles; mercury in fish
