Study information for comets, meteors, asteroids, and stars

QuestionAnswer
By what other name are "shooting stars" known? meteors that are in the Earth's atmosphere
What happens when a comet gets too close to the sun? It burns up.
Why do we measure distances from Earth to stars? In light years
What is a light year? 6 trillion miles or the distance light can travel in one year.
What determines the color of a star? The temperature
Why do scientists study distant galaxies? To get a better understanding of our galaxy and how it's aging and expanding
How do astronomers classify galaxies? By their shape
How have astronomers determined that we live in a spiral galaxy? They think it is spiral shaped based on observations of other galaxies and measurements within our own galaxy.
Why can't we see the spiral shape of the Milky Way? We are located within one of its spiral arms
What is the sequence of star colors from hottest to coolest? blue, white, yellow, orange, red
Why do blue stars have the shortest lives? They use their hydrogen very quickly. Once it is gone, they can no longer generate energy and they die or explode as supernovas.
Why are distances in space measured in light years? Distances in space are measured in light years because space is so large. It is easier to work with smaller numbers.
What determines the life cycle of a star? Mass (and size too)
What are the stages of a low mass star? (Like the sun) stellar nebula-Main Sequence- Red Giant- Planetary nebula- White Dwarf- Black Dwarf
What are the stages of the life of a massive star? Stellar nebula-main sequence- red supergiant- supernova- black hole OR neutron star
How were asteroids, meteors, and comets created? They are the leftover particles from the formation of the solar system.
Where are most asteroids located? In the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
Where are most comets located? Oord Cloud or Kuiper Belt
What shape orbits do celestial bodies have in space? elliptical. Comets have ELONGATED elliptical shapes.
Describe the composition of Earth, asteroids, and comets. Earth- rock, gasses, metals Asteroids- mostly carbon rocks Comets- ice, gas, dirt
Describe the orbit of asteroids and comets. Asteroids and comets orbit the sun. Comets orbit the sun, but in elongated orbits which take them beyond most planets to the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt.
Describe the orbit of meteroids. Meteoroids do not orbit the sun, but randomly float around in space. Meteors burn up in the atmosphere. Meteroids can orbit the sun within the asteroid belt. Meteroites land on Earth.
What happens as a comet moves through space? Comets eventually melt as they move past the sun.
What happens as a meteor and asteroid move through space? Meteroites and asteroids could crash into planets or moons and cause craters. May even crash into planets and moons and cause craters. May even cause thick clouds of gas snd block out the sun for extended periods of time.
