photosynthesis Sunlight provides the energy for this food-making process
tissue a group of similar cells that perform a specific function in an organism
chloroplast A plant cell structure in which photosynthesis occurs
vacuole A large sac-like storage area in a cell
cuticle The waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants. Helps the plant retain water
vascular tissue The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tubelike structures
fertilization The joint of a sperm cell and a n egg cell
zygote A fertilized egg
nonvascular plant A low-growing plant that lacks true vascular tissue
vascular plant a plant that hass true cascular tissue
chlorophyll a green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria
sporophyte the stage in life cycle of a plant in which the plant produces spores
gametophyte The stage in a life cycle of a plant in which the plant produces gametes, or sex cells
transmission The process in which some objecys allow light to pass through them
reflection the process when light hits a shiny surface such as a mirror, the light bounces back
absorption when dark objects, such as street pavements take in light
accesory pigment a pigment other than chlorophyll found in plants
rhizoid A thin rootlike structure that banchors a mss and absorbs water and nutrients from the plant
bog A wetland where sphagnum moss grows on top of acidic water
peat Compressed layers of sphagnum mosses that accumulate in bogs
frond The leaf of a fern plant
