Biology Chapter 24
Chapter 24 Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Invertebrate | Animal without backbones. |
| Exoskeleton | A rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, esp. arthropods, providing both support and protection |
| Endoskeleton | An internal skeleton, such as the bony or cartilaginous skeleton of vertebrates |
| Vertebrate | An animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes |
| Hermaphrodite | A person or animal having both male and female sex organs or other sexual characteristics, either abnormally or (in the case of some organisms) as the natural condition |
| Zygote | A diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum |
| Internal Fertilization | occurs when the sperm and egg combine inside the animal's body. |
| External Fertilization | occurs when egg and sperm combine outside the animal's body. |
| Blasternal | a fluid-filled ball of cells. |
| Gastrula | looks like a double bubble, one bubble inside another. it is a two-cell-layer sac with an opening at one end. |
| Endoderm | develop into the digestive organs and the lining of the digestive tract. |
| Ectoderm | the outer layer of cells in the gastrula. |
| Mesoderm | cell division in some animals continues in the gastrula until another layer of cells. |
| Symmetry | describes the similarity or balance among body structures of organisms. |
| Radial Symmetry | can be divided along any plane, through the central axis, into roughly equal halves. |
| Bilateral Symmetry | can be divided into mirror image halves only among one plane through the central axis. |
| Anterior | of or near the head end or toward the front plane of a body |
| Posterior | tail end. |
| Cephalization | the tendency to concentrate nervous tissue and sensory organs at the anterior end of the animal. |
| Dorsal | the backside, animals with bilateral symmetry have this. |
| Ventral | the underside belly, animals with bilateral symmetry have this. |
| Coelom | one type of fluid-filled cavity. |
| Pseudocoelom | a fluid-filled body cavity that develops between the mesoderm and the endoderm rather than developing entirely within the mesoderm as in coelomates. |
| Acoelomate | animals that do not have a coelom such as flatworms. |
| Protostome | the mouth develops from the first opening in the gastrula. |
| Deuterostome | the anus develops from the first opening in the gastrula. |
| Filter Feeder | when an organism such as a sponge gets its food by filtering small particles from water. |
| Sessile | they are attached to and stay in one place. |
| Cnidocytes | Cnidarian tentacles are armed with stinging cell. |
| Gastrovascular Cavity | the inner cell layer of cnidarians surrounds a space. |
| Nerve Net | conducts impulses to and from all parts of the body. |
| Polyp | a tube-shaped body and a mouth surrounded by tentacles. |
| Medusa | an umbrella-shaped body and tentacles that hang down. |
