Sun Earth Moon

For science

QuestionAnswer
Rotation A rotation is a circular movement of an object around a center (or point) of rotation
Revolution the motion of one body around another
Axial Tilt axial tilt, known to astronomers as obliquity, is the angle between an object's rotational axis, and its orbital axis
Lunar Eclipse A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra
Solar Eclipse As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun
Neap Tide The tide which occurs when the Moon is in its first and third quarter; the effects of the Sun and Moon being partially cancelled out this type of tide is of minimum range
Spring Tide The exceptionally high and low tides that occur at the time of the new moon or the full moon when the sun, moon, and earth are approximately aligned
New Moon new moon is the phase of the Moon when it lies closest to the Sun in the sky as seen from the Earth
Full Moon Full moon is a lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun
First Quarter Moon phase between the New and Full Moon where exactly half of the side facing Earth is illuminated
Third Quarter/Last Quarter approximately one week after a full moon, when half of the moon's disk is illuminated by the sun
Waxing Have a progressively larger part of its visible surface illuminated, increasing its apparent size
Waning Have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size
Waxing Crescent The moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. Illumination is increasing
Waxing Gibbous A lunar phase or phase of the moon is the appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth Illumination is increasing
Waning Crescent The moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. Illumination is decreasing
Waning Gibbous A lunar phase or phase of the moon is the appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth Illumination is decreasing
Wave electromagnetic radiation: radiation consisting of waves of energy associated with electric and magnetic fields
Tide The alternate rising and falling of the sea, usually twice in each lunar day at a particular place, due to the attraction of the moon
Umbra The fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, esp. the area on the earth or moon
Penumbra The shadow cast by the earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse
Total Eclipse An eclipse in which the whole of the disk of the sun or moon is obscured
Partial Eclipse an eclipse in which the eclipsed body is only partially obscured
Polaris A fairly bright star located within one degree of the north celestial pole, in the constellation Ursa Minor
Seasons Each of the four divisions of the year marked by particular weather patterns and daylight hours
