Water in Earth's Processes

TermDefinition
Water Cycle The continuous movement of water through the environment of Earth. The 3 major parts are evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. (caused by the sun's energy)
precipitation Water that falls from clouds in various forms such as rain, sleet, hail, and snow.
condensation The process in which water changes from water vapor to liquid when the air is cooled.
evaporation The process in which water turns from liquid to water vapor when water is heated.
topography The arrangement of natural and man made features of a particular area.
waves The movement of energy through a body of water.
tide the rising and falling of the water level of the ocean due to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon
salt water water in Earth's oceans that contain dissolved salts and minerals
salinity the amount of dissolved salt in water
density the amount of matter in a given volume or space
Features of the ocean floor Continental shelf, continental slope, ocean trench, abyssal plain, mid-ocean ridge, seamounts, submarine canyons
ocean current a mass of moving water through the ocean
aquifer a body of permeable rock which can contain or transmit groundwater.
permeable the ease with which fluids can pass through a body of soil or rock
porosity the space between solid particles of soil or rock that can be filled by fluids.
