| topographic map | A map that shows the elevation of an area of Earth's surface using contour lines. |
| fault-block mountains | When Earth's crust breaks along a fault, and one side of the fault moves up and the other side moves down. |
| folded mountains | Mountains formed when a continental plate is compressed or squeezed, the ground is forced upward. |
| crater | A cup-shaped depression (hole). |
| primary waves | The fastes moving waves in an earthquake. They pass through both solid and liquid layers of Earth. |
| secondary waves | Waves from an earthquake that only move through Earth's solid layers. These waves move up and down. |
| chemical weathering | The process through which chemicals break down rocks and other materials. |
| continents | One of several very large landmasses on Earth. |
| tsunami | A huge wave caused by an earthquake under the ocean. |
