Conservation

Conservation of Habitats, Species and Environments.

QuestionAnswer
What is a Seed Bank? A collection seeds (genetic Material) of plants, secured and stored as a record of plant species.
What is a Gene Bank? A storage of sex cells from animals in order to keep a record and preserve for future safety.
What is conservation: The protection and maintenance of an area of significant scientific or ecological interest.
What is conservation important: Biodiversity allows for greater speciation which in turns leads to greater variety of life on the planet. Increased Genetic diversity can be helpful to humans such as in the case of plants and medicines.
What does In-situ Conservation mean? Conservation within the natural habitat and natural area. Such as creating national parks.
What does Ex-Situ conservation mean? Conservation not within a natural habitat, such as in a Zoo or Seed bank.
Give some examples of Ex-Situ conservation methods: Zoos creating captive breading programs for endangered species (cross breading with other zoos to maintain a wide gene pool). Seed banks providing 'back ups' for plants near extinction.
Give some examples of In-Situ conservation methods: Creation of national parks to protect wildlife, creating corridors for migration of species populations to increase gene pool verity, Reintroduction and assisting in the raising of animals in natural environment.
