Rock Types

Rocks and the Rock Cycle Quiz

TermDefinition
Igneous Rocks that form from the cooling and hardening of lava or magma
Intrusive Igneous rocks that form from magma inside the earth
Extrusive Igneous rocks that form from lava outside the earth
Coarse Grained Large crystals formed from slow cooling magma
Fine Grained Small crystals formed from fast cooling magma or lava
Glassy No grains; formed from extremely fast cooling lava
Lava Molten rock that is on the earth’s surface
Magma Molten rock that is inside the earth’s surface
Metamorphic Rocks that form when heat and pressure is applied to an existing rock
Foliated When a metamorphic rock's grains are organized into parallel layers
Non-foliated When a metamorphic rock's grains are arranged randomly
Sedimentary Rocks that are formed from the compaction and cementation of sediment or organic matter
Erosion When sediment is carried by wind or water
Deposition When sediment settles out of the wind or water
Compaction When sediment is pressed together
Cementation When sediment is glued together
Organic A type of sedimentary rock formed from materials that were once living (plant or animal)
Clastic A type of sedimentary rock that is made up of broken pieces of other rock
Chemical A type of sedimentary rock that is formed when dissolved minerals precipitate out of a liquid or are left behind after evaporation.
Rock Cycle A series of processes that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another
Rock a naturally formed mixture of one or more minerals and/or organic material
