Biology Chapter 3
Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ecology | The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings. |
| Levels of Organizaton | Organism: individual living thing. Population: group of organisms in the same area. Community: populations together in a defined area. Ecosystem: community and its non-living surroundings. Biome: group of ecosystems with same climate and dominant communun |
| Biome | A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominant communities. |
| Species | A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Autotroph/Producer | Use energy from the earth to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic molecules. / Organism that makes its own food. |
| Photosynthesis | Light energy from the sun powers chemical reactions that convert CO2 and H2O into O2 and carbohydrates, like sugars and starches. Responsible for adding O2 and removing CO@ from Earth's atmosphere. |
| Chemosynthesis | When organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates. Usually performed by bacteria. |
| Heterotroph/Consumer | Organisms that rely on other organism for their energy and food supply. |
| Herbivore | Eat Plants |
| Carnivore | Eat Animals |
| Omnivore | Eat Plants and Animals |
| Detritivore | Eat plants and animal remains and other dead matter, collectively called detritus. |
| Dcomposer | Break down organic matter. |
| Food Chain | A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. |
| Food Web | When the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem form a network of complex interactions. They link all the food chains in an ecosystem together. |
| Cellular Respiration | process that takes place in the cells and tissues during which energy is released and carbon dioxide is produced and absorbed by the blood to be transported to the lungs. |
| Trophic Level | Each step in a food chain or food web. |
| Ecological Pyramid | Relative amounts of energy available at each trophic level |
| Biogeochemical Cycle | Elements, chemical compounds and other forms of matter passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another through these cycles. Connects biological, geological, and chemical aspects of the biosphere. |
| Limiting Nutrient | When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly, this substance is called __. |
| Algal Bloom | When an ecosystem receives a large input of a limiting nutrient the result is often immediate increase in the amount of algae and other producers. |
