biology flash cards

QuestionAnswer
Ecology The scientific study of interactions among organismas and their environment, or surroundings.
Levels of Organization Organism>population>community>ecosystem>biome>biosphere
Organism An individual living thing.
Population Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Community Groups of different populations that live together in a patricular area.
Ecosystem Collection of all the organisms that live in a patricular place together with their non-living physical environment.
Biome Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and dominant communities.
Biosphere The part of the Earth that contains all ecosystems.
Species A groups of organismas so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Autotroph Use energy form the environment to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds.
Producer An organism that makes thier own food, also known as an autotroph.
Photosynthesis Changing light energy into stored chemical energy.
Chemosynthesis When organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates, performed by several types of bacteria.
Heterotroph Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply, also known as consumers.
Herbivore Eat plants.
Carnivore Eat animals.
Omnivore Eat plants and animals.
Detrivores Eat plant and animal remains and other dead matter, collectively called detrius.
Decomposer Break down organic matter.
Food Chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
Food Web When the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem form a network of complex interactions.
Cellular Respiration Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the prescence of oxygen.
Trophic Levels Each step in a food chain of a food web.
Ecological Pyrimad Only about 10% of the energy avaiable within one trophic level is transferred to organisms at the next trophic level.
Biogeochemical Cycle The Passing of the same molecules around again and again within the biosphere.
Limiting Nutrient When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly.
Algal Bloom When an aquatic system recieves a large input of a limiting nutrient, the result is often of algae and other producers.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
