Review

QuestionAnswer
Ecology Scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment.
Levels of Organization Organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere.
Biome Group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
Species A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Autotrophs An organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from organic compounds; known as the producer.
Photosynthesis Process by which plants and other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen.
Chemosynthesis When organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates.
Heterotroph Organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also known as the consumer.
Herbivore Obtain energy by only eating plants.
Carnivore Eat animals (meat)
Omnivore Eat both plants and animals.
Detritivore Feed on plant and animal remains and other dead matter.
Decomposer breaks down organic matter.
Food Chain a series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
Food Web Links all the food chains in an ecosystem together.
Cellular Respiration Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
Trophic Level Each step in a food chain or web.
Ecological Pyramid diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in the food chain or web.
Biogeochemical cycle Process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another.
Limiting Nutrient When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce.
Algal boom when an aquatic ecosystem receives a large input of limiting nutrient, an increase of algae and other producers are made.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
