| Ring of Fire | A major belt of volcanoes. |
| Island Arc | The resulting volcanoes create a string of islands. |
| Hot Spot | It is an area where material forms deep within the mantle rises and then melts forming magma. |
| Element | A substance that can not be broken down. |
| Compound | A substance made up of 2 or more elements that have been chemically combined. |
| Physical Property | Any thing that can be observed or measured without changing. |
| Chemical Property | Any property that produces a change in the composition of matter. |
| Viscosity | The resistance of a liquid. |
| Silica | It is made up of the elements oxygen and silicon. |
| Pahoehoe | Fast moving lava with low viscosity. |
| Aa | Slow moving cool lava with low viscosity. |
| Magma Chamber | Magma collects in this. |
| Pipe | A long tube that connects to the magma chamber. |
| Vent | Molten lava and gas leave through here. |
| Lava Flow | It is the area covered by lava as it flows out. |
| Crater | A bowl shaped area that may form at the top a volcano around the central vent. |
| Pyroclastic Flow | It occurs when an explosive eruption occurs. |
| Dormant | They expect that these will erupt in the future. |

| Caldera | The huge hole left by the collapse of a volcano. |
| Volcanic Neck | It forms when magma hardens in a volcano's pipe. |
| Dike | Magma that forces itself across rock layers and hardens. |
| Sill | When magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock. |
| Batholith | A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust. |
| Geothermal Activity | Magma a few kilometers beneath Earth's surface heats underground water. |
| Geyser | A fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground. |
