| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atom | is the smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element. |
| Nucleus | are the center and the most important part of an atom. |
| Isotope | is when an atom contains equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei. |
| Compound | is a substance that is composed of two or more different elements chemically combined. |
| Covalent bond | is sharing electrons between atoms, opposite of ionic bond. |
| Molecule | is a group of atoms bonded together by covalent bonds and having no overall charge. |
| Ion | is an atom with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. |
| Ionic bond | is giving or taking electrons between atoms, opposite of covalent bond. |
| Mixture | is a combination of substances (in which individual substances retain their own properties). |
| Solution | is a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substance. |
| Polar molecule | is a molecule with an unequal distribution of charge (that is, each molecule has a positive end and a negative end). |
| Hydrogen bond | is a weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other. |
| Metabolism | is the chemical reaction that occurs within a living organism in order to maintain life (two kinds of metabolism: constructive metabolism and destructive metabolism). |
| pH | is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is. |
| Acid | is a chemical substance that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus paper red (typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid and having a pH of less than 7). |
| Base | is any substance that has pH greater than 7. |
