QuestionAnswer
Atom is the smallest particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element.
Nucleus are the center and the most important part of an atom.
Isotope is when an atom contains equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei.
Compound is a substance that is composed of two or more different elements chemically combined.
Covalent bond is sharing electrons between atoms, opposite of ionic bond.
Molecule is a group of atoms bonded together by covalent bonds and having no overall charge.
Ion is an atom with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Ionic bond is giving or taking electrons between atoms, opposite of covalent bond.
Mixture is a combination of substances (in which individual substances retain their own properties).
Solution is a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substance.
Polar molecule is a molecule with an unequal distribution of charge (that is, each molecule has a positive end and a negative end).
Hydrogen bond is a weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other.
Metabolism is the chemical reaction that occurs within a living organism in order to maintain life (two kinds of metabolism: constructive metabolism and destructive metabolism).
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
Acid is a chemical substance that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus paper red (typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid and having a pH of less than 7).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
