Ecosystem vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
ecosystem All the organisms that live in an environment together with all the nonliving factors of the environment.
ecology The study of how organisms interact with each other and their physical environment.
species Group of organisms that can mate and produce offspring.
population All the organisms of the same species.
community All the populations of organisms that share an environment.
biotic Living things in the environment.
abiotic Nonliving things in the environment.
limiting factor Factors that limit how many organisms can live in an environment.
habitat Where an organism lives in the ecosystem.
niche An organism’s special role in its environment.
competition Occurs when more than one population tries to make use of the same limited resource.
predation Feeding relationship in which one animal captures and eats another animal for food.
symbiosis A close relationship between two species.
mutualism Both organisms benefit.
commensalism One organism benefits the other is unaffected.
parasitism One organism benefits at the others expense.
predator Organism that eats the prey.
prey Organism that is hunted and eaten.
host Organism that supports the parasite.
herbivore Organisms that only eat producers.
carnivore Organisms that eats mostly meat.
producer Level of organism that gets its energy directly from the sun.
consumer Level of organism that gets its energy from others.
food web Shows how energy moves through the environment.
decomposer Organisms that break down waste and remains to be recycled back into the environment.
