earthquake

| seismic waves | waves that travel through the earth. |
| P-wave | primary seismic wave. wave movement is similar to wave direction. Wave that arrives first. |
| S-wave | secondary seismic wave. wave movement is perpendicular to the direction of the wave. |
| surface wave | Type of seismic wave that forms when s-waves and p-waves reach earth's surface. |
| lag time | time between the arrival of the p-wave and the s-wave |
| epicenter | point on the surface of the earth directly above the focus. |
| focus | the point of origin for an earthquake. where the slippage occurs. |
| seismometer | an instrument for measuring the direction, duration, and force of seismic waves. |
| seismograph | a measuring instrument for recording the movement of seismic wave. Graph refers to the action of writing so a seismograph will actually graph the wave. |
| seismogram | the graphical record of an earthquake. the actual recording on paper |
