| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a rock? | A naturally formed, solid chunk of the Earth that is usually made up of one or more types of minerals. |
| What are the three types of rocks? | Igneous rocks, Sedimentary rocks, and Metamorphic rocks. |
| Igneous rocks are formed by what? | Volcanoes-they form when magma cools. |
| What are the two types of Igneous rocks? | Intrusive (inside the Earth) and Extrusive (on the ground) rocks. |
| Slower cooling means more what? | More crystallization. |
| Sedimentary rocks are formed by what? | Sediments of other rocks-they are deposited at the same place and held together by "glue". |
| How are particles deposited? | Water, wind, rain, and glaciers. |
| Where are Sedimentary rocks built up? | On land and underwater. |
| Metamorphic rocks are formed by what? | Rocks that have been changed by heat, pressure, or both-atoms from rocks break apart and reorganize themselves. |
| What are the two types of Metamorphic rocks? | Foliated (you see bands) and Non-foliated (you don't see bands) rocks. |
| What are two examples of Igneous rocks? | Granite and Basalt. |
| What are two traits of Igneous rocks? | Crystallization and air pockets. |
| Do rocks closer to the surface cool slower or faster? | Faster. |
| What are three examples of Sedimentary rocks? | Sandstone, Limestone, and Shale. |
| What are four traits of Sedimentary rocks? | Crystals, layering, shells, and fossils. |
| How do Sedimentary rocks react to acid? | Sandstones rocks absorb the acid. Acid fizzes when it hits Limestone, but Shale has no affect on acid, or vice versa. |
| What are two traits of Metamorphic rocks? | Mica and recrystallization. |
| What are two examples of Metamorphic rocks? | Schist and Gniess. |
