Freshwater pollution, droughts, and floods- use for quiz 12-4!!!

QuestionAnswer
water pollution the addition of any substance that has a negative effect of the water and the living things that depend on it
pollutants the substances that cause water pollution
point source a specific source of pollution that can be identified
non-point source a widely spread source of pollution the can't be tied to a specific point of origin
pesticides chemicals intended to kill insects and other organisms that damage crops
DDT a pesticide that dissolves into water and is absorbed by algae, can cause illnesses like birth defect and cancer
the 3 major sources of water pollution are... human waste, industrial wastes, and chemical ruoff
cholera a disease caused by bacteria in human wastes
chemical waste- point source pipe with chemicals going right to a river
chemical waste- nonpoint source leak out of storage bins and pollute water and soil
smoke and exhaust burning oil or coal (cars, buses, factories, etc.)
acid rain rain or another form of precipitation that is more acidic that usual
heat pollution factories use water to cool off machinery and return it to the body of water
runoff from farms water takes fertilizer to the body of water and then eutrophication happens faster
runoff from roads gas, oil, ans salt go to rivers and other bodies of water
drought a long period of time when there isn't enough rain
2 things that can be put off until after a drought washing your car and lawn
flood when an area of land get too much water at once and overflows
flash flood a sudden violent flood that occurs within a few hours or minutes storm
3 ways to make barriers for a flood dams, levees, sediments
dam a wall with holes on a river used to make hydroelectricity
levee deposits that build up on the sides of rivers that help control flooding
kinetic energy the form of energy that an object has when it is moving
potential energy energy that is stored and waiting to used
hydroelectric power electricity produced by the kinetic energy of water moving over a waterfall or through a dam
dams- green- yes 1)green way for energy 2) not air pollution 3) renewable 4) no carbon dioxide
dams- green- no 1) fish migration 2) ruins habitats 3) floods
hydro power potential water is stored up in resourvoir
hydro power kinetic water moves dwon the penstock
hydro power mechenical water spins turbines and electro magnet
hydro power electrical elctro magnet creates elctricity which is sent to buildings
giardia a disease which is gotten from people drinking water that is not clean
dams- good prevents floods, hydro power, drinking from resourvoir
dams- bad fish migration, floods area for resourvoir
order of energy for dam potential, kinetic, mechanical, electrical
