Earth Science Vocabulary Set 4

QuestionAnswer
Geology The science devoted to the study of the Earth, particularly the solid Earth, the rocks that compose it, and various landforms.
Crust The outermost layer of the Earth.
Mantle The middle layer of the Earth's interior (between the central and outer region). This is also the largest layer, which makes up more than 80% of the Earth.
Core The central region of the Earth. This region is believed to be made of mostly iron and includes a liquid outer region and solid inner region.
Lithosphere The rocky outer portion of the Earth, which includes both the crust and solid upper mantle.
Asthenosphere An area of the mantle, which seems to be capable of slow fluid movement.
Mineral A solid, naturally occurring substance with a definite chemical composition and a crystalline structure.
Igneous Rock Rocks formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten material.
Sedimentary Rock Rock formed when material that is deposited in layers on the bottom of an ocean or lake is transformed into rock with heat and pressure.
Metamorphic Rock Rock that was once one form of rock but has changed to another under the influence of heat, pressure, or some other agent without passing through a liquid phase.
