Cellular Transport

Glencoe Chap 8.1

QuestionAnswer
Active transport cell moves materials across the cell membrane from area of lower concentration to higher concentration. Requires energy.
endocytosis active transport (requires energy). Cell surrounds material with part of the plasma membrane and absorbs it into the cell.
exocytosis Active transport (requires energy). process in which the cell removes materials from the cell.
facilitated diffusion Passive transport ( does not require energy). Process that move materials through the plasma membrane via the transport proteins.
hypertonic solution dissolved substances have a greater concentration outside the cell then inside the cell. Causes water to leave the cell and the cell to shrink
hypotonic solution Concentration of dissolved substances is lower outside the cell than inside so water moves into the cell causing the cell to expand and possibly burst.
isotonic solution concentration of dissolved substances outside the cell is equal to what is inside the cell. water molecules continue to diffuse through the membrane maintaining homeostasis in the cell.
osmosis process of diffusion of water across the selectively permeable membrane of the cell. Direction of movement depends on the concentration of materials on either side of the cell membrane
passive transport diffusion of particles across the cell membrane. No energy is used.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
