QuestionAnswer
Define organic Carbon bonded to carbon H-C=C-H
What is a monomer? Small chemical unit that makes up a polymer
What is a polymer? Molecules composed of many monomers; makes up up macromolecules
What are the four types of biomolecules? -Carbohydrates -Proteins -Fat -Nucleic Acids
What makes up a carbohydrate?(Three) Hydrogen Oxygen Carbon
What is a carbohydrates common structure? Rings
What monomers make up carbs?(Three) Monosaccarides Disaccarides Polysaccarides
What are the functions of a carbohydrate?(Three things) Source of energy Structural purposes (Especially in plants) Cell identifiction and communication
What makes up a protein?(Four) Nitrogen Oxygen Carbon Hydrogen
What is a proteins common structure?(Three) A amino group, a R group, and a carboxyl group
What monomers make up proteins? Amino acids (-NH2 on one end, -Cooh on the other end)
What are the functions of a protein?(Three) Controls rate of reactions & cell proceses Cellular structures (Muscles and tissues) Transport substances and help fight diseases
What makes up a nucleic acid?(4) Hydrogen Carbon Oxygen Nitrogen Phosphorus
What it a nucleic acids common structure? Nucleotide
What monomers make up nucleic acids?(three parts) Nitrogeous base 5 carbon sugar Phosphate group
What is the function of nucleic acids? Store and transmit hereditry or geneitc information
What makes up a fat?(Three things) Oxygen Carbon Hydrogen
What is a fats common structure? Hydrophilic head Hydrophobic Tail
what monomers make up a fat? Glyceral head Fatty acid tail
What is the function of a fat?(Four) Energy Biologial membrane and waterproof covering insulation nd cusioning Steriods & hormones
What is the difference between monosaccaride and polysaccaride? Monosccaride is a simple sugar, and polysaccarides are complex carbs, which give you more and lasting energy.
What foods are simple sugars? Milk and friuts
What foods are starches? Pasta and potatos
What foods are fats? Eggs and Butter
What foods have proteins? Meat & eggs
What is starch storage? Humans store starches in our liver and muscles, while plants store it in their cvacuoles, or use it for their cell walls. For humans it's called Glycogen and for plants it's cellulose.
What is a enzyme? A enzyme is a protein that act like biological catalysts. They speed up chemical reactoins that take place in cells.
How do enzymes work? In enzyme-catalyzed reactions, the reactants are called substrates. The substrates bind to the active site, Where the substrates are converted into products, and then products are released. And then the cycle starts all over again.
What is a catalyst? A catalyst is a substance that speeds up the rate of chemical reaction.
How do all cells contaion enzymes? All cells contain enzymes, because the organelles in the cells make new materials, and some have to use chemical reactions, to do so.
Give real life examples of enzymes and how things effect their ability to work. The enzyme Bromeline in pineapple wont work to break down geletin if it's boiled.
