Cell Processes I

QuestionAnswer
What is passive transport? Regulating movement of molecules from one side of the membrane to the other without using energy.
What is diffusion? Process by which particles move from a high to low concentration
What are examples of diffusion? Sugar dissolving in coffee
What is equillibrium? When the amount of solute is equal on both sides of the membrane
Once equillibrium is reached, do the particles stop moving? Water transports back and fourth still
What is facillitated diffusion? Process of iffusion in which molecules pass across the membrnae through protein channels
Does facillitated diffusion use a protein carrier? Yes, it has to because some molecules are to big to pas straight through the lipid bilayer.
What is osmosis? Diffusion of water through a selectivly permeable membrane from high concentration to low
What is a aquaporin? Water protein in a cell
What is a isotonic enviroment? When the concentration of water and solute is the same strength on each side of the membrane.
What is a hypertonic enviroment? The solution has a higher solute concentration than the cell. Which causes the cell to shrink.
What is a hypotonic enviroment? The solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell, which causes it to swell
What is osmotic pressure? Pressure that must be applied to prevent osmotic movement across a selectivly permeable membrane
What is active transport? The movement of materials against a concentration gradient and requires energy.
What is molecular transport? Small molecules and ions are carried across membranes by proteins in the membrane that act like pumps
What is a protein pump? Pump small molecules & ions across the cell
What is bulk transport? Larger molecules and clumops of material transported across the cell membrane
What is endocytosis? Is the process of taking material into the cell by infoldings or pockets in the cell membrane.
What is phagocytosis? A type of endocytosis. Where the cell surounds the particle, and engulfs it.
What is a example of phagocytosis? A white blood cell eating a damaged red blood cell.
What is pinocytosis? Cells take up liquid from a surrounding enviroment, Tiny pockets form along the cell membrane and fill with liquid. and then pinch off and form vcuoles inside the cell.
What is exocytosis? The membrane of the vacuole fuses with the cell membrane, and forces the contents out of the cell.
What is a example of exocytosis? The removal of water from a cell by a contractile vacuole.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
