What is a phase change? A reversible physical change that occurs when a substance changes from one state of matter to another.
What is endothermic? A description of change in which a system absorbs energy from its surroundings.
What is heat of fusion? The energy a substance must absorb in order to change from a solid to a liquid.
What is exothermic? A description of a change in which a system releases energy to its surroundings.
What is vaporization? The phase change in which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas.
What is heat of vaporization? The energy a substance must absorb in order to change from a liquid to a gas.
What is evaporation? the process that changes a substance from a liquid to a gas at temperatures below the substances boiling point.
What is vapor pressure? the pressure caused by the collisions of particles in vapor with the walls of a container.
What is condensation? the phase change in which a substance changes from a gas vapor to a liquid.
What is sublimation? the phase change in which a substance changes from a solid to a gas vapor without changing to a liquid first
What is deposition? the phase change in which a gas changes directly to a solid without first changing to a liquid.
