Key Terms Ch. 1Definitions
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Energy The ability to do work or cause change.
Physical Property A characteristic if a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into something different.
Chemical Property A characteristic that is observed when a substance interacts with another substance.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.
Compound A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio.
Mixture Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined.
Weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object.
Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object.
Volume The amount of space that matter occupies.
Density The measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume.
Atom The smallest particles of an element.
Molecule A particle made of tow or more atoms bonded together.
