QuestionAnswer
Air mass a pocket of air with similar characteristics throughout it.
Air pressure gradient a gradual change in air pressure from one place to another
Atmospheric (barometric) pressure the weight of the air pressing on earth’s surface.
Anemometer an instrument used to measure wind speed.
Atmospheric transparency a measure of the amount of light passing thru the atmosphere
Barometer an instrument that measures atmospheric pressure
Cloud Cover The percent of the sky covered by clouds
Cold Front the leading edge of a cold air mass
Cyclone an area of low pressure that spins towards its center
Dew point temperature at which water vapor condenses to form dew
Dry bulb thermometer a regular thermometer with a dry piece of cotton on the end
Wet bulb thermometer thermometer with a wet cotton ball or a wet “sock” at the bottom
Front the boundary between two air masses
Humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air
Relative humidity the ratio between the amount of water vapor in the air and how much it could hold
Isoline a line that connects point of equal value
Jet stream a ‘river’ of air that circles the globe near the north and south poles
Monsoon cyclic and extreme weather changes caused by seasonal changes in wind and ocean currents
Occluded front boundary between a cold front overtaking a warm front, causing an updraft and cyclone
Planetary wind belt a stream of air that circles the globe; caused by earth’s rotation
Polar front an air mass of cold, dry (continental) or moist (maritime) air formed near a pole
Precipitation rain, sleet, hail, snow, etc
Probability the percent chance that an event will occur.
Psychrometer an instrument used to measure relative humidity using wet bulb and dry bulb thermometers
Radar use of radio waves to locate objects in the sky
Troposphere layer of the atmosphere that rests on earth’s surface
Visibility the farthest distance you can see an object
Warm front leading edge of a warm air mass
Water vapor Water in the gas phase
Weather variables characteristics of weather that can be measured
