QuestionAnswer
What is Troposphere? Contains most of the mass of the atmosphere Is the closest layer to Earth Surface.Weather occurs in the troposphere.air temp decrease altitude increases
What is Stratosphere? Is above the tropopause. Is air temp increases with altitude.Contains ozone layer.
What is Mesosphere? Above the stratopause.Air temp decreases with altitude.
What is Thermosphere? layer between 100km and 500km above earth surface.low density of air causes the temp. to rise.
What is exosphere? The outermost layer of earths atmosphere.the number of atoms and molecules in the exosphere becomes very small as altitude. increases.
What is radiation? Transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves.
What is conduction? Transfer of thermal energy between objects when their atoms or molecules collide.
What is Convection? Transfer of thermal energy by the movement of heated material from one place to another.
What is Temperature Inversion? Increase in temp. with height in an atmospheric layer.
What is Humidity? The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere at a given location on earths surface.
What is Saturation? When the amount of water vapor in a volume of air has reached the maximum amount.
What is Relative Humidity? The amount of water vapor in a volume of air relative to the amount of water vapor needed for that volume of air to reach saturation.
What is Dew Point? The temp. in which air must be cooled at constant pressure to reach saturation.
What is Latent Heat? The extra thermal contained in water vapor compared to liquid water.
What is Condensation Nucleus? Small particle in the atmosphere around which water droplets can form.
What is Orographic Lifting? When air mass is forced to rise over topographic barrier.
What is Cumulus? Clouds are puffy lumpy looking clouds that usually occur below 2000m.
What is Stratus? Layer sheet like cloud that covers much or all of the sky in a given area.
What is Precipitation? All forms of water that fall from clouds to the ground.
What is Coalescence? Clouds droplets collide and join together to from a larger droplet.
What is cirrus? Clouds made of ice crystals for at heights of 6000m where temperatures are below freezing.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
