Biology, Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Climax Community | a stable mature community that goes under little or no change in species over time |
| Limiting Factor | any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, number, reproduction, or distribution or organisms |
| Secondary Successsion | sequence of changes that take place after a community is disrupted by natural disasters or human actions |
| Primary Succession | colonization of barren land by pioneer organisms |
| tolerance | the ability of an organism to with stand fluctuations in biotic and abiotic environmental factors |
| Biome | a major ecological community type |
| Grassland | biome composed of large communities covered with rich soil, grasses, and similar small plants, receives 25-75 centimeters pf percipitation |
| Desert | arid region with sparse to almost nonexistent plant life; driest biome, usually recieves less than 25 cm of percipitiation |
| Carrying Capacity | number of organisms of one species that an environment can support |
| Density-dependent Factor | limiting factors such as disease, parasites, or food ability that affects growth of a population |
| Density-independent Factor | factor such as temperature, storms, floods, drought, or habitat disruption that affects all populations, regardless of their density |
| Exponential Growth | growth pattern where a population grows faster as it increases in size; graph of an exponentially growing population resembles a J-curve |
| Life-history pattern | an organism's pattern of reproduction; may be rapid or slow |
| Age Structure | proportions of a population that are at different age levels |
| Birthrate | number of live births per 1000 population in a given year |
| Death Rate | number of deaths per 1000 population in a given year |
| natality | the ratio of the number of birthrates to the size of the population |
| Moraility | the state of being subject to death |
| Demography | study of population characteristics such as a growth rate, age structure and geographic distribution |
| Doubling Time | time needed for a population to double in size |
