What are the building blocks or protein? amino acids
What are essential amino acids? amino acids the body doesn't make, they have to come from food
Nutrient that comes from the soil minerals
What is a complex carbohydrate? a chain of sugar
What type of vitamin needs to be consumed more frequently? water-soluble vitamins
Why do we need food? energy, raw materials, the ability to maintain homeostasis
Why is water so important? it makes up blood and sweat, needed for many chemical reactions in the body, needed to maintain homeostasis
What type of fat is healthier to eat and why? unsaturated fats, they don't clog arteries as much as saturated fats
What are examples of unsaturated fats? olive oil, vegetable oil, canola oil
What is an example of a saturated fat? butter
Why is it important to eat complete proteins? They contain all of the essential amino acids which the body can not make. We need protein for tissue growth and repair.
Which nutrient contains the most energy per gram? fat
What is another name for a simple carbohydrate? sugar
What is a calorie? The amount of energy needed to raise 1 g of water 1 degree Celcius. We measure the amount of energy in food in Calories. 1Calorie = 1000 calories
How many calories are needed per day? 2000-2500
What is cholesterol? A waxy-fat like substance found in animal products.
What is an example of an incomplete protein? lentils, black beans, rice
What is an example of a simple carbohydrate? milk, fruit, candy
What is an example of a complete protein? eggs, steak, chicken, milk
What is an example of a complex carbohydrate? potatoes, pasta, cereal, bread
What is an example of a vitamin and its source? Vitamin C comes from orange juice. Vitamin A- carrots
What is an example of a mineral in its source? calcium- milk iron- red meat
How much fat should be consumed per day? 65 g or less
What tissue is needed for growth and repair? protein
The highest percentage of calories in a person's diet should come from what nutrient? carbohydrates
Why is it important to eat a variety of food? to get all of the nutrients, no one food contains all nutrients, vitamins, and minerals
Half of your plate should be made up of what two food groups? What two food groups make up the other half? What food group is not found on the plate? 1/2 the plate should be made up of fruits and vegetables 1/2 the plate should be made up of grains and protein dairy is the food group not found on the plate
What factors have led to the rise in obesity? decrease in physical activity, increase in portion sizes, increase in junk food consumption
What diseases are associated with obesity? heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea
