QuestionAnswer
Known as the environmental factors that influence growth, survival, and reproduction of a species. Niche
A principle that states two species with identical niches cannot coexist indefinitely. Competitive exclusion principle:
Physical conditions under which a species might live in the absence of interactions with other species. Fundamental niche
Physical conditions under which a species might live in the presence of interactions with other species (competition, predation, parasitism, mutualism). Realized niche
When two different species hybridize. One or more hybrid individuals doubles its chromosome number, making it capable of sexual reproduction. The result is the creation of a new species. Allopolyploidity
Advantages of modeling are that a model is what three thing? Predictive, can be tested, and can be adjusted.
What model predicts that species coexist when intraspecific competition is stronger than interspecific competition? The Lotka – Volterra model
The process of evolution toward niche divergence in the face of competition is known as what? Character displacement
What species occur in separate locations? Allopatric species
What species occur in the same region? Sympatric species
A type of field experiment where the experimenter controls all important factors except one, the factor of interest. Laboratory study
A type of field experiment where the experimenter controls only the factor of interest. Field Study
Field experiments should include the following three things: Controls, replication, and knowledge of initial conditions

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
