Biomes. Unit 3
| Biomes | list six major biomes |
|---|---|
| Rain forest | Heavy showers, very little sun on forest floor. Tropical and Temperate forests. |
| Grassland | Prairie. Better than desert but still warm. Populated mostly grass other non woody plants. Get 25 - 75 centimeters of rain per year. |
| Desert | Receives less than 25 centimeters of rain per year. Large temperature shifts. |
| Deciduous forest | Deciduous trees shred leaves and grow new ones every year. Example: Oaks and Maples. Get at least 50 centimeters of rain every year. Growing season lasts approximately 5 - 6 months. |
| Mountains and Ice | At the base are grasslands. As you go up mountains you pass through a series of biomes ending in a tundra, or sheets of ice. |
| Boreal | Northern Territories. Particular smell of pine trees: fir & spruce. Coniferous Trees: produce seeds in cones and have needles for leaves. Areas of Boreal biomes: Forest & animals |
| Tundra | Above 10,000 feet. Low oxygen levels makes low growing plants. Snow and cold, short summer season. Tundra Biomes: Plants and animals |
