Vocabulary #4 & #5

Cell parts/organelles, and cell division

QuestionAnswer
cell (#4) basic unit of structure and function in living things
nucleus (#4) found in Eukaryotic cells. Controls all cell activities.
cell membrane (#4) a thin "skin" that surrounds the cell and controls what goes in and out of the cell
mitochondria (#4) organelles that turn food into energy through cell respiration
organelle (#4) a part inside a cell that has its own membrane and does its own special job to keep the cell alive
ribosome (#4) a tiny part inside a cell that produces proteins
endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (#4) an organelle that is a network of pathways that move materials throughout the inside of a cell
cytoplasm (#4) the watery liquid that fills up the cell and keeps the organelles floating inside it
vacuole (#4) an organelle that is used to store water, food or other materials
organism (#4) a single living thing
chloroplast (#5) a green organelle in plants that uses sunlight to make food (sugar) through the process of photosynthesis
cell wall (#5) a tough structure on the outside of plant cells that protects and supports the cell
chlorophyll (#5) the green chemical inside chloroplasts that absorbs sunlight.
lysosome (#5) an organelle that contains chemicals that break down waste materials and food into smaller pieces.
mitosis (#5) a type of cell division: a cell divides into two exact copies of itself. The new "daughter" cells have the same number of chromosomes as the "parent" cell.
meiosis (#5) a special type of cell division used only to create sex cells in the reproductive organs. The parent cell divides into four different "daughter" cells that each have only half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
chromosome (#5) a structure found inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells that is made of DNA
somatic cell (#5) a body cell - not used for sexual reproduction
gamete (#5) a sex cell - only used for sexual reproduction
cell cycle (#5) a series of repeating phases (stages) during a cell's life that includes periods of growth, replication, and division.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
