Ch 7 Cell Transport
cellular transports
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| solution | a mixture in which the molecules of one substance are evenly dispersed in another |
| solvent | the substance that makes up the greater part of the solution |
| solute | the substance dissolved in the solvent |
| diffusion | process by which molecules of a substance move from areas of higher concentration of that substance to areas of lower concentration |
| concentration gradient | difference in concentration from the highest to the lowest number of molecules in a substance |
| selectively permeable | describes materials that allow only certain substances to pass through them |
| osmosis | diffusion of water through a membrane |
| equilibrium | state of balance |
| isotonic solution | solution in which the concentration of solutes outside a cell is the same as that inside the cell |
| hypotonic solution | solution in which the concentration of solutes outside the cell is lower than inside the cell |
| hypertonic solution | solution in which the concentration of solutes outside a cell is greater than inside the cell |
| turgor | water pressure that builds in a plant cell |
| contractile vacuoles | actively pump excess watere out of the cell in freshwater unicellular organisms |
| carrier molecules | proteins in the cell membrane that transport large molecules or molecules that do not dissolve in the lipidsthat make up the cell membrane |
| facilitated diffusion | substances move with the concentration gradient from high to low, but carrier molecules speed up the movement of diffusing substances |
| active transport | involves the movement of materials against the concentration gradient |
| endocytosis | bulk trabsport of substances into a cell |
| phagocytosis | movement of solids or large particles into a cell |
| pinocytosis | movement of liquids and small particles into a cell |
| exocytosis | bulk transport of substances out of a cell |
