Microbiology Chpt 17

Instructor Claudia Sellers

QuestionAnswer
What is innate resistance? Defenses against any pathogen. Like a psychopath they like to kill.
What is adaptive resistance? induced resistance to a specific pathogen. Cellular memory. Adaptive will pair with innate by marking the ones they want innate to kill.
Differentiate between humoral and cell-mediated immunity Humoral immunity kills extra cellular pathogens (outside)is brought about through antibiotics B-cells and cell-mediated is natural and kills intracellular pathogen through exposure and the bodies T-cell.
Explain the function of antibodies and describe the structural characteristics. variable regions, constant region (class of antibody)
IgG funtion Monomer & found in blood, lymph, intestine. Function:enhances phagocytosis, neutralizes toxins & viruses, and protects fetus & new born.
IgM function Pentamer & found in blood, lymph, B-cell surface as a monomer. Function:effective against microoganisms & agglutinating antigens, first antibodies produced in response to intial infection.
IgA funtion J chain & found in secretions, blood, lymph. Function:localized protection on mucosal surface.
IgD function Monomer & found in B-cell surface, blood, lymph. Function:presence on B-cell functions in intiation of immune response.
IgE function Monomer & found bound to mast & basophill cells throughout body, blood. Function:allergic reactions: possibly lysis of parasitic worms.
Explain how an antibody aids in pathogen removal. Obstinization, Neutralize, Agglutenate
name the function of B cells Convert to plasma & B memory cell
Name a function of the Th cell. Activates cell related to cell-mediated immunity: macrophages Tc cells & natural killer cells. Stimulates production of eosinophils, IgM & IgE.
Name a function of the Tc cell. Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte(CTL). Destroys target cells on contact; generated fro T cytotoxic(Tc) cell.
Name a function of the Ts cell. Stop response
Name a function of the APC. Antigen-Presenting Cells. Digest antigen, Ag fragments on APC surface w/MHC (B-cells, dendritic cells, & Activated macrophages)
Name a function of the MHC
Name a function of the activated macrophage
Where are class 1 and class 2 MHCs located? Notes
How do Th1 and Th2 cells differ? Interact with?
Define apoptosis and five a potential medical application. Maybe use in tumor cells
Describe clonal selection theory. Dormat until activated
Identify at least one function for cell mediated immunity.
Identify at least one function for cytokines.
Identify at least one function for interleukins.
Identify at least one function for interferons.
Distinguish a primary from seconday immune response. Shouldn't get sick from same thing twice.
Clonal selection development of clones of B and T cells against a specific antigen.
Clonal deletion elimination of B and T cells that react w/self.
Naturally acquired active immunity Resulting from infection
Naturally acquried passive immunity Transplacental or via colostrum
Artificiall acquired active immunity Injection of Ag (vaccination)
Artificially acquired passive immunity Injection of Ab (eg:snake bite venom)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
