Cell Function

QuestionAnswer
Nucleus Controls most activities in the cell and transmits hereditary information.
Cell Theory All organisms are composed of cells; cells are the basic units of structure and function in organisms, and all cells come from preexisting cells.
Cytoplasm Everything within the cell but the nucleus
Chromosomes Rod or rope shaped body, composed of DNA and proteins, that carries hereditary information
Chromatin Diffused material carrying hereditary information about a cell
Nucleolus Spherical body of DNA, RNA, and proteins in the nucleus
Nuclear envelope 2-layer lipid and protein membrane that forms the boundary with the cytoplasm
Nuclear pores Openings that allow some materials to pass between the cytoplasm and the nucleus
Organelles Tiny structures that perform specialized functions in the cell.
Cell membrane Holds cell together and regulates what enters and leaves the cell
Cell wall Aids in the protection and support of plant cells
middle lamella First part of cell wall, partition forms between two newly formed cells.
cytoplasmic streaming the flow of cytoplasm, moves organelles from one place to another inside the cell
endoplasmic reticulum internal trsnsport system
ribosomes sites of protein synthesis
Golgi Bodies storage and packaging areas of chemicals
mitochondria provides energy for the cell
plastids some plastids contain food, others contain pigments
vacuoles bubblelike structures that store water, waste materials, or food particles
lysosomes digest large particles found in the cell
microtubules cylinders of protein that lie just beneath the cell membrane and support the cell and maintain its shape
spindle fibers appear during cell division, help move chromosomes through the cytoplasm
cilia short threadlike organelles; aid in the locomotion and in the movement of substances across the cell's surface
flagfella aid in the locomotion of unicellular organisms
prokaryotes cells without a true nucleus
eukaryotes cells that possess a well-defined nucleus surrounded by a nuclear membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
