What is an element? a pure substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler by ordinary means
What is a compound? a substance made of two or more elements chemically bonded or joined
What are silicate minerals? minerals that contain a combination of two common elements, silicon & oxygen
What are nonsilicate minerals?
What is a mineral? a naturally formed nonliving solid that has a definate crystalline structure
What is the Mohs Scale? a scale that scientists rank minerals according to their hardness
What is luster? the way in which a mineral reflects light
What is streak? the color of a mineral in powdered form
What is cleavage? the tendency of a mineral to break along smooth, flat surfaces
What is fracture? the tendency of some minerals to break unevenly
What is hardness? the measure of a mineral's resistance to being scratched
What is density? the ratio of a mass to the volume of a substance
