Biology 150 Exam II

Chapter 52 - Hierarchical Organization of Ecology

QuestionAnswer
Organismal Ecology (1) how do hammerhead sharks select a mate? includes the sub-disciplines of physiological, evolutionary, and behavioral ecology, is concerned with how an organism's structure, physiology, and (for animals) behavior meet the challenges posed by its environment.
Population Ecology (2) what environmental factors affect the reproductive rate of deer mice? a population is a group of individuals of the same species living in an area. population ecology analyzes factors that affect population size and how and why it changes through time.
Community Ecology (3) what factors influence the diversity of species that make up a forest? a community is a group of populations of different species in an area. community ecology examines how interactions between species, such as predation and competition, affect community structure and organization.
Ecosystem Ecology (4) what factors control photosynthetic productivity in a temperate grassland ecosystem? an ecosystem is the community of organisms in an area and the physical factors with which those organisms interact. ecosystem ecology emphasizes energy flow and chemical cycling between organisms and the environment.
Landscape Ecology (5) to what extent do the trees lining a river serve as corridors of dispersal for animals? a landscape (or seascape) is a mosaic of connected ecosystems. research in landscape ecology focuses on the factors controlling exchanges of energy, materials, and organisms across multiple ecosystems.
Global Ecology (6) how does ocean circulation affect the global distribution of crustaceans? the biosphere is the global ecosystem -- the sum of all the planet's ecosystems and landscapes. the global ecology examines how the regional exchange of energy and materials influences the functioning and distribution of organisms across the biosphere.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
