| oxygen | fresh air the body takes in |
| carbon dioxide | used air the body exhales |
| respiratory system | system by which oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is removed |
| cartilage | tough, flexible body material |
| inhale | to breath in |
| exhale | to breath out |
| breathing rate | The number of times a person inhales in one minute. |
| pitch | sounds you make by either tightening or relaxing your vocal cords |
| bronchial tube | One of the two tubes in which the windpip branches ; one tube goes to each lung. |
| air sac | One of many tiny, thin-walled pockets in the lungs through which oxygen moves into the blood and carbon dioxide is removed. |
| cell | The basic unit that makes up all living things |
| respiration | The process in which cells use oxygen and give off carbon dioxide |
| circulation | The movement of blood to the heart, throughout the body and back to the heart |
| heart | The muscular organ that pumps blood through the bolld vessels of the body. |
| circulatory system | The heart and the network of blood vessels, which work together to carry blood throughout the body. |

| ventricle | Either of the two lower chambers of the heart |
| pulse | The number of times a heart beats in one minute. |
| blood | A tissue made up of a liquid, called plasma, and several types of cells |
| diaphragm | A large dome-shaped muscle separating the chest from the stomach area |
| excretory system | The body system that gets rid of harmful wastes produced by the cells. |
| windpipe | The air passage connecting the throat to the lungs. |
| spasm | The sudden contraction of a muscle |
