Chapter 10 Earth Sun

TN Holt Science & Technology

QuestionAnswer
* Identify Day The time required for Earth to rotate once on its axis.
* Identify Equinox The time when the sun is directly above the equator;
* Identify Solstice happens when the sun is farthest north or south of the equator;
What causes the phases of the moon? This changing appearance of the moon results from the changing position of the moon in relation to Earth and the sun. As the moon revolves around Earth, the amount of sunlight reflected toward Earth by the face of the moon changes.
Solstice the point at which the sun is as far north or as far south of the equator as possible
Equinox the moment when the sun appears to cross the celestial equator
It takes Earth 23 hours and 56 minutes to rotate once on its axis. This is called a _____. Day
A ______ includes the time of light and dark. Day
* What causes the phases of the moon? The relative position of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
5. *What causes winter in the Southern Hemisphere? Earth's Tilt
What causes winter in the Southern Hemisphere? The North Pole is tilted toward the sun. The summer solstice marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
6. *What happens at the solstice? The Northern or Southern Hemisphere tilts towards the sun.
What happens at the solstice? A solstice happens when the sun is farthest N or S of the equator. In June, the NH tilts toward the sun, so the NH is warmer than the SH. At this time, the NH has more daylight hrs than the SH does.In Dec., opposite happens b/c the SH tilts toward the sun
What happens in the season's yearly cycle on December 22? The North Pole is tilted away from the sun. The winter solistice marks the beginning of winter in the NH. There are fewer daylight hrs in the NH than in SH.
7. *What happens in the season's yearly cycle on December 22? North Pole is tilted away from the sun.
8. *Earth's rotation is a direct cause of day and night.
9. *What happens during a total solar eclipse? The sun and the moon appear to the same size.
What happens during a total solar eclipse? During TSE, the moon is at a point in its orbit that is closer to Earth. During a TSE, the moon appears to be the same size as the sun & appears to fully cover the disk of the sun. Only the sun's corona, or faint outer atmosphere, is visible during a TSE.
10. *Why do we always see the same side of the moon from Earth? The period of rotation equals the period of revolution.
Why do we always see the same side of the moon from Earth? The rate at which the moon rotates on its axis is the same as the rate at which the moon revolves around Earth. Because these rates are the same, the same side of the moon always faces Earth.
11. *When does a lunar eclipse occur? When the Earth, Sun, and Moon are in a straight line.
When does a lunar eclipse occur? A lunar eclipse happens when Earth is between the sun and the moon and Earth's shadow falls on the moon.
12. *Why don't solar and lunar eclipses occur every month? The moon's orbit is tilted.
Why don't solar and lunar eclipses occur every month? Reason is Ms orbit around E is tilted n relation 2 Es orbit around the S. This tilt places Ms out of Es shadow 4 most full-M phases.Tilt also places E out of Ms shadow for most new M phases. B/c Ms orbit is tilted, the M,S,&E arent aligned every mo.
13. *Why does the moon's gravity create high and low tides? The moon is revolving slower than the Earth's rotates.
Why does the moon's gravity create high and low tides? The bulges that form in the oceans because of the moon's pull are high tides. In areas between high tides, low tides form. This happens because the water is pulled toward high tide areas.
14. *Spring and neap tides occur in patterns governed by ____________. The relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
Spring and neap tides occur in patterns governed by ____________. The relative positions of the Earth, moon, and sun (the phases of the moon).
What controls the length of a day? A amt of time it takes E to complete a turn on its axis B AOT it takes E to complete an orbit around the sun C. AOT it takes the M to complete an orbit around E D AOT it takes the s to complete a turn on its axis
Draw the positions of the Earth, moon, and sun during lunar and solar eclipse.
Diagram the relationship of Earth and the sun that accounts for the seasons and explain.
If we did not have a tilt of the Earth would we have seasons? Explain. No would b diff weather conditions across E but @ any pt the weather would always b same.Equator always hot, poles cold with little sunlight.B/C axis of E is tilted & its rotation, diff pts on surface of E receive more/less, sunlight at diff Xs of yr
Your family is planning to build a homes near the beach. which is better for choosing a place to build a home: during spring tide or neap tides? Why? During Spring Tide since it has the maximum tidal range. You would know where to build to avoid the water.
While the moon is waxing, the sunlit part we see A increases. B decreases. C stays the same. D disappears A. increase
Which of the following latitudes receive the most direct solar energy? A latitudes near the north pole B latitudes near the south pole C latitudes near mountain ranges D latitudes near the equator D latitudes near the equator
During which moon phase do solar eclipses happen? An eclipse of the Sun (or solar eclipse) can only occur at New Moon when the Moon passes between Earth and Sun.
Why do the sun and the moon appear to move across the sky each day?
What causes the moon's phases? It results from the changing position of the moon in relation to Earth and the sun.
