chemosynthesis Some species of bacteria can produce carbohydrates from inorganic molecules. EX: Bactria found along hydrothermal vents in the ocean
gross primary productivity The rate at which producers in an ecosystem capture energy.
biomass Organic Material
net primary productivity measures the rate at which biomass accumulates.
trophic level Indicates the organisms position in the sequence of energy transfers.
food chain Single pathway of feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem that result in energy transfer.
food web Interrelated food chains in an ecosystem.
consumers organisms that get their energy from eating other organisms. EX: Animals
autotrophs(producers) EX:grass and trees
Herbivores eat only producers. EX" Cows, sheep, deer
Carnivores Consumers that eat only other consumers. EX: Wolves, bobcat, coyte
Omnivores Eat both plants and meat EX: humans, bears
Detritivores Eat dead organisms EX: Vultures, maggots
Decomposers Consumers that breakdown dead organisma in an ecosystems. (returns nutrients to soil, and water. and air.) EX: fungi and bacteria.
