Albumin One of a group of simple proteins; it comprises one percent of the body
Biopsy Excision of a small piece of tissue for microscopic examination
Bleeding Time Measures time necessary for active bleeding from a clean superficial wound to cease; normal range is 3 to 6 minutes
Clotting Time Coagulation time
Endotracheal Tube Tube used to provide an airway through the trachea and at the same time prevent aspiration of foreign materials into the bronchus
Gastrostomy Surgical creation of a gastric fistula through the abdominal wall. It is necessary in carcinoma
Hct Hematocrit
Hematocrit Expressed as the percentage of total blood volume which consists of erythrocytes packed by centrifugation of blood
Hemoglobin The iron-containing pigment of the red blood cells. Its function is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissue
Hemovac Apparatus for constant closed wound suction. Suction is maintained by a plastic container with a spring inside that tries to force apart the lids
Herniorrhaphy Surgical procedure for hernia. The herniating tissues are returned to the abdominal cavity and the defect
Hgb Hemoglobin
Incentive Spirometry Small plastic machine that gives visual feedback to guide the patient to inhale slowly and deeply to maximize lung inflation
Laparotomy The surgical opening of the abdomen; an abdominal operation
Parenteral Outside of the intestines or alimentary tract; used to refer to injection or intravenous routes
PCA Pump Patient controlled analgesic administered intravenously with machine
Peptic Ulcer An ulcer occurring in the lower end of the esophagus, in the stomach, in the duodenum or on the jejunal side of the gastrojejunostomy
Pulmonary Embolism Obstruction of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by embolus
Transurethral Resection (TUR) Pertains to an operation performed through the urethra to remove sections of the prostate gland
WBC White blood cell count. Measures number of white blood cells in a diluted sample of blood
