older adult abuse

6 types of abuse physical, emotional, sexual, financial, violation of rights, exploitation of finances

types of neglect passive and active
passive neglect unintentional, leave alone for long periods of time
active neglect intetional, not feeding, clothing, or sheltering
non-verbal psychological elder abuse can take the form of... ignoring, isolating, terrorizing, or menacing
abandonment willful disertion of elder by caregiver or other responsible one
signs & symptoms of abuse physical: bruising, fractures Emotional: fear, depression Behavioral: withdrawal, anger, aggression
APS adult protective services, provides services only if the senior agrees or has been declared incompetent by the court and a guardian has been appointed
barriers to obtaining help cultural traditions, fear of being put into an institution,isolation, embarrassed, afraid of further abuse
