Respiratory System

Human Anatomy & Physiology

QuestionAnswer
Function Brings oxygen into the body and to the blood Removes carbon dioxide from the body
Organs Nose,nasal chambers,larnyx,pharnyx,epiglottis,trachea,bronchi,bronchioles,alveoli,diaphragm,lungs,mouth
Epiglottis A flap of tissue over the trachea. It stops the food from going into the lungs.
Alveoli(Air sacs) Air sacs covered with capillaries. The capillaries are where the oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and leave the blood.
Pathway of the Air 1. Nose 2. Nasal Chamber 3. Pharnyx 4. Larnyx 5. Epiglottis 6. Trachea 7. Bronchi 8. Bronchioles 9. Alveoli
Inhalation and Exhalation Physical Changes In The Body Inhale: 1. The diaphragm contracts and pulls down 2. Space is made for the lungs to expand 3. There is lower pressure inside the thoracic cavity than there is outside, so air rushes in
Inhalation and Exhalation Physical Changes In The Body Exhale: 1. The diaphragm relaxes and moves up 2. The space in the thoracic cavity is decreased and the lungs contract 3. There is higher pressure in the thoracic cavity then there is outside, so the air rushes out
Changes In The Pressure Molecules move from an area of HIGH pressure to an area of LOW pressure Inhale: Outside pressure is higher than inside your body Exhale: Inside pressure is higher than outside your body
What Does The Diaphragm Do? Muscle separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities When it contracts and expands, it changes the pressure in the thoracic cavity and forces the movement of air
