Earth life is composed of hardware and software. What does this mean? Software- DNA is the info storage of life itself, runs all of Earth’s lifes hardware Hardware- RNA by carrying amino accids to protein building sites, but also software in the way it contains storage. Lipids
Why is concentration important in forming life? Life comes down to concentration. We can’t have reaction w/o a sufficient concentration. And thus it’s important because in our body, there are tons of reactions going on continuously. And w/o these we wouldn’t be able to run.
How can “Earth life” be defined? Uses DNA: specific genetic code, only twenty amino acids. Always cellular? Is a virus ‘alive’? or must need some dna?
What are the two energy sources of life? 1) Sun 2) Earth(Geothermal energy)
How old is the earth, and how old is the oldest known life? What is the evidence? 4.6Billion years old, 4.0-3.8Gyrs with fossil evidence.
Where might life have begun on Earth? Possible places including darwin’s warm pond, thermal vents, seashore, or impact craters.
What was the Heavy Bombardment and how might it have affected life?
What is Horizontal Gene Transfer and why does it matter? It’s the transfer of genetic material not based on reproduction. Important for bacterial antibiotic resistance.
What makes the earth rare? Distance from star, Ocean, CO2/O2, Jupiter like neighbor, plate tectonics, right ------------star mass, stable orbits, right kind of galaxy, atmospheric properties, position in -----------galaxy
What is important about: distance, Jupiter, moon, size of sun, location of solar system, location of the planetary orbit? These all play an affect on Earth itself. Jupiter protects us from comets and astroids, size of sun gives off certain heat, same with location, and orbit is important for collisions.
What are stromatolites? layers of bacteria and sediment, and grow up as broad, thinly layered columns in ----------shallow seas, lakes, and ponds. Found in shark bay australia
When was the Archean and Proterozoic and Phanerozoic? 3.8bya, 2500mya, 542mya
When did Eukaryotes arise? 2.0-1.6Gyrs
When did metazoans first appear? 542mya
What is the theory of endosymbiosis? That one prokaryote ate another prokaryote.
From what group did metazoans probably arise? flagellated eukaryote
What were the triggers or causes of the CE? The advent of precipitated skeletons Evolutionary thresholds were attainted allowing large animal size the predation hypothesis
