Plate Tectonics 8th

QuestionAnswer
Continental Crust Thicker than oceanic 30-100KM thick, mostly made of granite
Mantle Largest layer made of Fe,Mg, Si, Al,O flows like warm plastic, convection currents set up here
Oceanic Crust thin dense crust mostly made of basalt
Deep Ocean Trench The oceanic crust bends downward and slides into the mantle leaving a long trench on the ocean floor.
Sea Floor Spreading Process where new crustal rock is being laid down along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
What are the four main Layers of the Earth? Inner CoreĀ  Outer Core Mantle and crust
Inner Core Made of Fe, Solid, high pressure and very hot (4300 C)
Convection The transfer of energy in liquids and gasses causing a change in density.
Conduction The transfer of energy between materials that are touching or solids.
outer Core Currents The outer core has convection currents and these cause the magnetic field.
Convection Currents Inside the earth. Heat from the core and the mantle is transferred towards the crust in conveyor belts.
Radiation The transfer of energy through space. (No Matter)
Lithosphere The solid part of the earth's crust made of plates. In constant motion two types of crust, oceanic and continental
Asthenosphere Top part of the mantle that flows like hot Tar, the lithosphere floats here
What was missing in Wegener's theory that the scientific community could not accept. Satisfactory explanation for the force large enough to push and pull continents.
Outer Core Made of Fe, Ni and S Liquid, hot(3700 C) responsible for the Magnetosphere
What evidence did Wegener put forward to back up his theory of Continental Drift? Land Features, fossils and evidence of climate change
Sonar Device that uses sound waves of energy to map the ocean floor.
Alfred Wegener Famous scientist given credit for Continental Drift.
What is the evidence for sea-floor spreading? Sonar images and the magnetic strip reversals and drilling samples from the ocean floor
Subduction the process by which ocean floor sinks beneath a deep ocean trench and back into the mantle.
Why is our planet not shrinking or expanding?(explain using the theory of plate tectonics) As crust is being destroyed new crust is being deposited on the earth's surface.
Earth Plates the lithosphere is broken into sections called plates.
plate boundaries The plates are connected by faults which are deep cracks in the earth crust where rocks move past one another.
Divergent Boundaries Plates that are moving apart from one another in opposite directions.
Convergent Boundaries Plates that are moving towards each other or converge.
Transform Boundaries This is where two plates slip bast each other moving in opposit directions.
Pangaea This means whole earth and is the name given to the earth's continental landmass were all together (200 MYA)
