Cell Organelles
Names and Functions of Cell Organelles
| Cell Organelle(s) | Function |
|---|---|
| Nuclear Envelope | Double membrane that surrounds nucleus |
| Cell Wall | Protects barrier |
| Plasma (Cell) Membrane | Water barrier; controls what enters and what leaves |
| Flagellum (Bacteria | Moves the cell |
| Pili (Bacteria) | Allows bacteria to communicate |
| Capsule (Bacteria) | Protects the white blood cells |
| Central Vacuole | (Plants only) Absorbs water |
| Vacuole | Stores nutrients and digests |
| Choloroplasts | (plants only) produces the green plant color; photosynthesis |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Breaks down proteins; makes lipids; filters toxins. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Make Proteins |
| Golgi Apparatus | Packages Micromolecules for shipment |
| Lysosome | contains digestive enzymes |
| Mitochondria | Provides energy, helps move organelles. Central power house of cells |
| Centrioles | fused microtubles |
| Peroxisomes | Converts fatty acids (harmful to cells) |
| Vesicles | hormones |
| Cytoplasm | the 'soup' in which organelles reside |
| Ribsomes | cell messengers. |
| Nucleus | Contains DNA characteristics |
| Nuclear Pores | Where nutrients are absorbed |
| Cytoskeleton | helps maintain cell shape |
| Nucleolus | Produces Ribosomes |
