Introduction to I.S.

Owens-PNHS-intro to I.S.H vocab

What is a pure substance? A pure substance is matter that has exactly the same composition.
What is an element? An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into smaller substances. An element has a fixed composition.
What is and atom? Atoms are the smallest particles of elements.
What makes up a compound? Compounds are made up of two or more simple substances. Water is made of hydrogen and oxygen so it is a compound.
What is a heterogeneous mixture? A heterogeneous mixture has parts that are noticeably different from each other.
What is a homogeneous mixture? A homogeneous mixture has particles that are evenly distributed and are hard to tell apart.
What is a solution? A solution is created when a substance dissolves and forms a homogeneous mixture
What is a suspension? A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture that eventually separates into layers.
What is a colloid? A colloid contains particle that are and intermediate in size. It doesn't separate into layers.
