Chemical Bonds and Macromolecules
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Monomer | subunit that serves as a building block of a polymer |
| Polymer | consisting of similar or identical monomers linked together by covalent bonds |
| Dehydration Synthesis | 2 molecules become covalently bonded by the removal of water. Requires energy |
| Hydrolysis | Breaks the bonds between molecules by the addition of water. Releases energy |
| Hydrophobic | No affinity to water |
| Hydrophilic | Affinity to water |
| Amphipathic | Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic, such as the phospholipid |
| Covalent bond | Strong chemical bond where electrons are shared between two atoms |
| Polar Covalent Bond | Covalent bond between atoms that differ in electronegativity |
| Hydrogen Bond | Weak chemical bond. Formed when slightly positive H+ atoms is attracted to a negative atom of another molecule |
| Saturated | C-C single bonds, therefore can compress to form a solid lipid at room temperature. |
| Unsaturated | C-C double/triple bonds, therefore cannot compress and forms liquid at room temperature. |
