aphotic zone cold and dark, area of ocean where sunlight cannot penetrate and photosynthesis cannot occur
photic zone receives sunlight, depth varies according to sunlight. Because water absorbs light, sunlight penetrates only the upper few hundred meters.
intertidal zone area of shoreline that is twice daily covered by water during high tide and exposed to air during low tide.
neritic zone extends from intertidal zone over the continental shelf and to relatively shallow water depths of about 180 m
oceanic zone deep water of the open sea, beyond continental shelf. divided into 2 parts--
pelagic zone open oceanic zone
benthic zone ocean bottom
plankton communities of small organisms that drift with the ocean currents, consumed by larger animals like turtles
estruary where freshwater rivers and streams flow into the sea
eutrophic lake rich in organic matter and vegetation, relatively murky waters.
oligotrophic lake contain little organic matter, sandy/ rocky bottoms, clear waters
freshwater wetland areas of land that are covered with fresh water for at least part of each year. main types are marshes and swamps. most productive freshwater ecosystem.
